Discover Planeta Vegetariano

Walking into Planeta Vegetariano feels like stepping into a calm pocket of Puerto Vallarta where food is taken seriously but never pretentiously. Tucked away at Iturbide 270, Proyecto escola, Centro, 48300 Puerto Vallarta, Jal., Mexico, this little vegetarian diner has quietly built a reputation that spreads mostly through word of mouth and glowing reviews rather than flashy marketing. I first ate here after a long morning wandering Centro, hungry but not in the mood for heavy food, and it quickly became one of those places I kept returning to without overthinking it.

The menu leans heavily on plant-based comfort food, but everything is prepared with intention. You’ll find hearty breakfast plates, fresh juices, and daily specials that rotate depending on what’s available locally. One morning I watched the staff prepping vegetables early, rinsing greens and chopping produce by hand, which explains why dishes arrive tasting clean and vibrant. Their cooking method is simple: minimal processing, balanced seasoning, and generous portions. That approach lines up with research from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, which consistently highlights whole vegetables, legumes, and grains as cornerstones of a balanced diet.

What stands out most is how accessible the food feels. This isn’t a place where you need to understand vegan jargon or study the menu twice. If you’ve ever been skeptical about vegetarian diners leaving you hungry, the plates here challenge that idea fast. One regular I chatted with mentioned coming in three times a week because the lunches keep him full through long shifts downtown. That tracks with nutritional data from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, which notes that well-planned vegetarian meals can fully support active lifestyles.

The atmosphere plays a big role in why people linger. Tables are close enough to spark casual conversation, and the staff treats everyone like a neighbor. I once overheard a server explaining how one of the sauces was blended with roasted vegetables instead of oil to keep it lighter, which is the kind of detail that builds trust. You get the sense that the kitchen understands not just how to cook vegetarian food, but why people choose it in the first place.

Reviews online often highlight the same themes: consistency, warmth, and honest pricing. Several mention that this diner is ideal for travelers who want something nourishing without losing half the day waiting for service. From my experience, that’s accurate. Orders move quickly, but nothing feels rushed. If there’s a wait, it’s usually because someone decided to order an extra smoothie or linger over coffee.

Location matters too. Being right in Centro makes it an easy stop whether you’re heading to the Malecón or just exploring side streets. I’ve recommended it to friends staying nearby, and every one of them came back with a variation of unexpectedly filling, fresh flavors, and friendly staff-all without prompting. Those reactions mirror broader trends reported by the World Health Organization, which points out that diets higher in plant foods are gaining popularity not just for health reasons, but for taste and sustainability.

There are limits worth noting. Seating is modest, so peak hours can feel snug, and the menu doesn’t aim to imitate meat-heavy dishes, which might not suit everyone. Still, that clarity is part of its charm. The diner knows what it is and sticks to it. For anyone browsing restaurant locations in Puerto Vallarta or scanning reviews for a dependable vegetarian option, this spot delivers exactly what it promises, no more and no less.

  • This place is a good stop for vegetarians and foodies in general in Puerta Vallarta! Simplicity is the underlying theme here. They have an excellent selection of salads, carbs, and proteins (soy based). If you enjoy flavor and spice, they have options to satisfy that craving as well. The drinks are freshly made with local fruits, and the menu changes daily. The ambiance is quiet, and unassuming with good service. They also offer a nice selection of homemade desserts. Come with an empty stomach and leave with a full heart!

  • Such a cute and fun buffet! This spot was great, we made the journey to eat here a few times. Not everything was vegan, but they did offer to make us vegan pancakes while we were there, which were delicious!

  • Had the lunch buffet at Planeta Vegetariano in Puerto Vallarta and it was excellent. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with care. Great variety of dishes, well-seasoned, and very satisfying even if you’re not strictly vegetarian. The atmosphere is relaxed, the staff is friendly, and it’s a great spot for a healthy, filling meal. One of the best vegetarian lunches I’ve had in PV. Highly recommended.

  • I first visited Planeta Vegetariano over 20 years ago, and coming back again recently felt like reconnecting with an old favorite. The most impressive part? The food is still incredibly tasty. The menu offers a wide variety of flavorful vegetarian dishes with plenty of fresh options, all thoughtfully prepared and satisfying. Everything tasted just as good as I remembered, if not better. Multiple soups, potato soufflé, pesto pasta, garbanzo fritter. Very delicious and filling! Buffet with dessert, liked how the muffin was not too sweet. Great quality ingredients. Beyond the food, the ambience is welcoming and comfortable, the restaurant is spotless, and the staff is genuinely friendly and helpful. You can tell there’s real care put into every detail, from cleanliness to service. It’s rare to find a place that maintains this level of quality and consistency over decades. Planeta Vegetariano has clearly stood the test of time, and I’m so glad I returned. Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates great vegetarian food in a warm, inviting setting.

  • Love coming here for lunch. Was new to me about a year ago, but have been on a recent binge stopping in a few times throughout the week. I know there are already a ton for great reviews, but I want to add one more to help anyone still on the fence about trying it out, because it is important to note that I am not vegetarian and love their food. The menu is always new and interesting with deep flavors. Though I may eat too much when I go, I always feel a healthy level of full when I leave. From the great cold salad selections to the soups and main dishes, everything is delicious with distinct and unique flavors. The staff is happy to share the ingredients and let you know which foods also qualify as 100% plant-based and which contain gluten or other allergens. One thing to know is that dessert is by request, so just let a staff member know when you are ready for a sweet treat. Though all the desserts are great, a small slice of the almond-banana cake (when available) is the perfect finish.

  • Completely yummy restaurant; hole in the wall. Wonderful flavors and variety, all feeling and tasting very healthy. Lots of choices, and over a dozen veggie salad options for making tacos. Also, a fritter, lasagna, and some sort of tofu ‘meat.’ All of it was fabulous and we are planning to go back for the breakfast buffet as well. The ambiance of the restaurant was super bright and inviting as well. All in all, a great experience. Oh and they were able to use our credit card which was helpful.

  • Came here twice in a week. Food was great and varied. The rice and beans were ahmazing. Their chile rellenos were sublime. Good value if you can eat. And our family ate so much that we were done for the day. High fiber - whole foods plant based. 99 percent of the food is vegan. Only one salad had a mayonnaise in it. So worked super well for us. Their dessert (muffin cookie) were excellent

  • Really sweet people who run this place. They also now accept payment with card. The place has a great ambience with Disney characters hidden in the murals. The breakfast we had was tasty and simple.
